Short biography

Since 2021 I am a JIN-MINECO-Researcher at the University of Barcelona after being awarded with a project Retos de Investigación 2021 (PID2020-118194RJ-I00). My fields of expertise are in Zooarchaeology and Taphonomy. I started my training in the Instituto Portugues de Arqueologia in Lisbon in 2002. Later, I completed my DEA and PhD in Archaeology at the University of Barcelona funded by FCT. During my postdoctoral stage, I got different fellowships and contracts including: Marie Curie Actions ITHACA, Beatriu de Pinós, Marie Curie Cofund and Juan de la Cierva-Incorporación. I have conducted my research in different research institutions such as University of Leicester (UK), University of Barcelona, University of Lleida and Instituto Portugues de Arqueologia. I have also worked as Professor Associat at University of Barcelona for 6 years, and at the Department of Animal Science of the University of Lleida for 1 year.

Research interests

My research is multidisciplinary and includes different lines focused to answering current questions in the fields of archaeology and history contributing to a better understanding of human populations from prehistoric and historical periods. The main goal of my research is to get better insights into human past populations focusing on: a) the study of diet and subsistence activities; b) the procurement of animal foods; b) the study of past animal hunting and animal husbandry economies; c) the analysis of animal remains as palaeoenvironmental indicators; and d) examining the role of animals in past societies beyond serving as food. In addition to classical archaeozoological methods and taphonomic analysis, I have also applied new methodologies such as geometric morphometrics or isotopic analysis, and explored other innovative areas of study such as animal palaeopathological or forensic taphonomic analyses.
