Ferran Estebaranz Sanchezá
Investigador técnico en el CSIC
Short biography
My formation has focused on the morphological dental evolution of fossil hominins of Plio-Pleistocene and modern H. sapiens, as well as on bioarchaeology of human populations of the Neolithic, both in the Near East and the Iberian Peninsula. My PhD thesis was based on the study of the pattern of buccal microwear in East African Pliocene hominins (A. anamensis and A. afarensis) of the Plio-Pleistocene of Africa, from which several publications in indexed and impact journals were derived. Moreover, my PhD dissertation was awarded the maximum mark and an Extraordinary Doctorate Award in Biology (“Sobresaliente cum laude”). As part of the process of obtaining samples for the PhD, I travelled to various African museums to obtain hominin dental moulds (National Museum of Kenya -Nairobi- and Arusha Museum -Tanzania). In addition, I have also published and collaborated in several methodological articles on obtaining high-resolution moulds and casts and 3D microscopy techniques (confocal and interferometry) applied to the study of micro striation patterns. Finally, during and after my PhD, I have established several collaborations with other international research groups such as OLAPP (USA-Tanzania), CSIC_IMF (Spain), IPHES (Spain), CSIC-Museo de Ciencias Naturales (Atapuerca), as a result of which several studies on the morphological evolution of the hominine dentition and diet during the European Pliocene have been published and the
